You may work alone or individually on this revision work. The marks are indications of the level of detail that your answers will require.

 

This work will assist you in revising for the essential sections for the exam that you will be taking shortly. You may use previous notes, books from the library or the Internet to help answer these questions, but do remember that curt and pasting answers does not help you to learn. You do need to WRITE your answers to help commit them to memory.

 

1.

a)         Describe TWO separate items that are defined by the Physical layer of the OSI model.                                                                                                  (2 marks)

 

b)         Describe TWO functions of the Data Link layer of the OSI model.        (2 marks)

 

c)         Describe TWO functions of the Network layer of the OSI model.          (2 marks)

 

d)         Describe TWO functions of the Transport layer of the OSI model.         (2 marks)

 

e)         Describe TWO functions of the Presentation layer of the OSI model.                                                                                                                                         (2 marks)

 

f)          Name FOUR services that are provided by the Application layer of the TCP/ IP model.                                                                                                 (4 marks)

 

g)         Give THREE reasons why a layered communications model is desirable in networked communications.                                                                          (6 marks)

 

 

 


For the following subnetting questions, assume that you may use subnet zero i.e. no subnetworks will be wasted.

You have been given the IP addressing range 200.24.35.0 /24

You have been asked to make FOUR equally sized subnetworks.

 

For each of these FOUR subnetworks provide:

 

a)         The network (wire) address plus subnet mask                           (2 marks)

b)         The first usable address                                                             (2 marks)

c)         The last usable address                                                             (2 marks)

d)         the broadcast address                                                                           (2 marks)

You have been given the IP addressing range 193.60.60.0 /24

You have been asked to make EIGHT equally sized subnetworks.

 

For each of these EIGHT subnetworks provide:

c)         The last usable address                                                             (2 marks)

4.

Write a list of all the commonly available Routing protocols. For each protocol, you should explain whether it is distance-vector, hybrid or link-state. Explain whether there are any significant advantages or disadvantages to each of the routing protocols. You my ignore the versions that have been created for IP version 6.              (4 marks for each)

 

 

 


5.

Draw and name the commonly used symbols for computer networking components. You may find it useful to use Packet Tracer to help you here.            (2 marks for each)

 

 

 


6.

Explain how WAN communication takes place between two DISTANT routers. Describe the hardware that is required for this communication to take place. (10 marks)
