IMPORTANT - Read this carefully before you start

Several of the PCs in Hawke 27 have 2 hard disks. Do not start until you have been told which machine to use as not all machines have 2 hard disks. The option to use the second hard disk is in the BIOS settings, but as this is password protected, you will not be able to do this. You will be told which machine to use.

The instructions below are written as a guide to installing the software and instructions such as Enter, OK, Next etc. are a guide to help you in choosing the correct response. If you ignore these instructions, you may need to restart the installation from scratch, a lengthy procedure.

Partitioning the hard disk

To install NT Server software you will first need to partition the second hard drive of the PC on which you are working. Currently the new hard disk has only one partition, C.

What is a partition?

Method

Boot the PC and it will display the C prompt. Be patient while this takes place. The CD drive is assigned D at this time.

Setting the partition

This is accomplished using the fdisk application.

Type fdisk at the command prompt, press Enter.

You will now have a list of options.

Read the options carefully then choose option 4 to view the current drives that are set up on the hard disk.

What is the function of fdisk?

You will see information in 6 categories

Status, Type, Volume Label, Mbytes, System, Usage. Take a note of the value of each of these categories. What do they mean?

Press Esc. Now select 1, Enter

Select 2 to create extended dos partition, Enter, then wait.

Enter size of partition required (in Mbytes). You should make the new partition 500 Mbytes. Enter. This will create the partition.

Now define the logical drive, press enter to confirm, Esc, Esc.

The System will now reboot.

Installation procedure for Windows NT server.

On boot up, the C prompt will be displayed, D will be created and E is now the CDROM drive. Check this is so. Now format the D drive from the C drive using the command:

format  D:

Change to D drive, dir. You ought to see the size of the partition you created. What size is displayed?

The CDROM may be a copy, i.e. it may have no label. Place it BLUE side DOWN on the CDROM tray.

Insert the CDROM containing Windows NT Server. Change to E, At the command prompt, type

cd i386                 press Enter.

At the prompt, type

winnt  /b                 (the 'b' option avoids using floppies during setup)

Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

Wait 10 minutes or so while the files are copied. When the copying has completed, remove the cdrom. Others may need to use the CDROM, please let them have this.

(Note. If there is a problem concerning the space on D {this will be displayed on the screen of the PC}, you will need to format D.

This is done using           c:\dos\format d:       )

Press Enter.

Let the PC make its own choices and note which ones are taken.

When this has completed press Enter.

Now you will see information concerning the system disks. Take notes of what is available. Enter.

Read and take notes of the screen contents. Enter.

Now you will see license details, use page down (13 times) to read through this information. F8 agrees with the licence conditions.

At this point you need to alter the keyboard layout from US to UK, but don't change any other options.

Enter. Select D drive. Pressing Enter installs NT to that drive.

Select "Convert the partition to NTFS". Enter.

Press letter C on the keyboard to begin the conversion process. Pressing Enter agrees with the location.

Now the hard disk is physically examined. What is the purpose of this? How do you think this is accomplished?

Press Enter. Wait a while as the disks are tested.

You will now have a screen informing you that the setup was successful. Press Enter.

Machine reboots, again allow the PC to define the options it requires. Take a note of the disk information.

The PC will reboot. Leave the keyboard alone, allow the PC to choose options itself.

Now a windowed setup screen will appear. Click Next.

You are now prompted to enter Name. Make this SOE. Organisation should be UOG.

Now enter the cd key. This is 040-0051512

Next.

You are now in licensing mode. Select 'per seat'. Next

The computer name is now asked for. Copy from the yellow sticker on your PC

This will be similar to me-h027-engxx. Next.

Server Type. Select 'Stand alone server'. Next.

Files will now be copied, wait a few minutes. Restart.

Select Windows NT Server, wait. Enter the password you used earlier.

Now check you can see your PC in network neighbourhood. You may also see other PCs that others have configured in Hawke 27.

You have successfully installed Windows NT Server.

Check in My Computer for the reported size of C and D drives.

How much disk space is used up on the C and D drives both as an absolute value and also as a fraction of the available disk space?

Important Note

The PC you are using has to be used by others as well. This means that you must finish this lab before the following week when the second hard disk will be reformatted. The PC you are using will be set back to using the first hard disk after the lab has finished and you will need a lab technician to change the BIOS settings if you need to come back to the lab to complete this lab.

Writing the report for this Laboratory

1. Write a brief précis of the installation procedure described above. Do NOT include terms such as Enter or OK. This was intended to assist you in completing the laboratory.

2. Answer all of the questions asked within the setup procedure.

3. Now write a brief account (no more than 750 words) that explains what the purpose of Windows NT Server is. How does it differ from the standard client version of NT? You will need to research this yourself.

Remember to include your references at the end of this work.
