Several of the PCs in Hawke 27 have 2 hard disks. Do not start until you have been told which machine to use as not all machines have 2 hard disks. The option to use the second hard disk is in the BIOS settings, but as this is password protected, you will not be able to do this. You will be told which machine to use.
The instructions below are written as a guide to installing the software and instructions such as Return, ok, next etc. are a guide to help you in choosing the correct response. If you ignore these instructions, you may need to restart the installation from scratch, a lengthy procedure.
In the text, I have used the term Return which has the
same meaning as Enter.
Boot up the machine and login as administrator. Use the password from the previous lab.
Before you install IIS you must install NT Service Pack 6. What is a Service Pack?
Installation of NT Service Pack 6
When you attempt to log into Socrates, you will be prompted for a username and password Use guest for both username and password.
Select Network Neighbourhood, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Hawke-NT, Socrates, Apps, NEP, SP6
Run the file called sp6i386.exe
Allow it to install. Accept the licence conditions. Back up the files when prompted to do so.
Click Install, then wait then click Restart
Select NT Server V4. Login using Ctrl +Alt +Del
Login using administrator and last week's password.
You have now installed Service Pack 6
Before proceeding with the installation you will need to install Internet Explorer.
Installation of Internet Explorer
The files necessary for the installation are held on Socrates under Apps, IE5. Use the file IE5setup.exe.
Install the Typical components, click Next, Finish. The machine will then restart.
Now login again as administrator.
The files that you need are held on Socrates. Login to Socrates as before. Follow the same path as before but this time the directory is called Iis4.
Run Setup.exe and a window appears. Click Next accepting the licence agreement.
Choose Typical components, click Next.
This page arranges the destination of your setup components. Leave this as default.
Next, Next, now wait while files are copied to the machine's hard drive.
When this has completed, click Finish.
The machine will reboot
Login as administrator once more.
When logged in, follow this route form Start menu.
Start, Programs, Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, Microsoft Internet Information Server, Internet Service Manager (not the HTML option).
This will give you the web page server console.
Open Internet Information Server
Right click on the machine you are using and select Properties
There are two options for the service you wish to edit, either www or ftp.
Choose ftp and set up an anonymous account. Also change the ftp login message to something that is suitable. See other ftp login messages if you need direction here. This message appears on client machines when they log into your ftp account.
When this is finished, go to another free machine in the lab and log into that with your own account and check that you are able to ftp the server. The identity will be that on the yellow sticker on the front of the machine.
You have two options here. You may either log in anonymously or alternatively as administrator using the appropriate password.
Ftp has now been installed. Make an estimate of the file transfer speed.
The web pages are held in a directory called d:\inetpub\wwwroot\
Microsoft have put their own pages in the directory. View these from a client machine using the identity of the server machine as the url.
You may remove these files and replace them with your own webpages. Until you change properties of the server, your webpages will need to have .htm extensions.
Note that the ftp directory is not the same as the web file directory. You may change the ftp destination directory to match the web file directory. If you do not do this you will not be able to ftp the webpages from a client machine directly to the webspace.
Now look at www properties and add index.html as a default document. Note that the server will not recognise .html documents until you do this.
The PC you are using has to be used by others as well. This means that you must finish this lab before the following week when the second hard disk will be reformatted. The PC you are using will be set back to using the first hard disk after the lab has finished and you will need a lab technician to change the BIOS settings if you need to come back to the lab to complete this lab.
Write-up for this lab. This is INDIVIDUAL work
Write a brief précis of the installation procedure described above. Do NOT include terms such as enter, ok. This was intended to assist you. Answer all of the questions asked within the setup procedure.
Now write a brief account detailing what the purpose of Windows Internet Information Server is. Compare the facilities offered by IIS 4 with those offered by Netscape Enterprise server 3.01 and Apache 1.2.
What other softwares are available for web page servers. You will need to research this yourself.
What security features are provided by IIS 4 and how does this compare with other web servers?
What is Microsoft Index Server. What facilities does it provide?
What ftp transfer rate did you achieve? What factors would have influenced this?
