Wireless Network Planning and
Design
When planning the location and coverage of wireless equipment, it is
necessary to consider the physical layout of the land. GIS software is
able to provide this.
One of the software tools available is available at ESRI.
Cellular Expert
Radio Network Planning in ArcGIS
Cellular ExpertTM is a wireless telecommunication network planning,
optimization and data management solution, available to the
telecommunication industry since 1995.
When used in conjunction with software for wireless modelling, it is
possible to produce spatial maps to visualise the coverage of a
particular network configuration. The screenshots below will help to
show the usefulness of such software.

The path of a point-to-point link can be analysed in detail and
the tower height can be adjusted to fit the terrain.
It is possible to view the charactristics of particular antennae for a
particular application.

Sites and sectors may also be previewed.

Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint radio links can be created
between transmitting and receiving sites.

Nominal cell planning can be performed using pre-defined cell size
based on the desired reliability level, overlap, subscriber penetration
and atmospheric conditions.
