Wireless Data Technologies
Introduction
In the UK, the Internet is supplied to universities, research
organisations and colleges by JANET, the Joint Academic Network. Janet
itself is connected to other networks around the world for global
connection - see network connection
diagram. JANET has around 18 million end-users across the UK. This
lecture will introduce JANET from the physical layer parts that are
wireless and will use the University of Greenwich's Medway campus as a
case study.
JANET microwave
Many sections of JANET are connected at the physical layer using
microwave technology. The Medway campus itself is connected to JANET
via 2 hops from the campus to Bluebell Hill, a repeater station for the
JANET network. Part of the JANET microwave network can be seen below in
the interactive Google map.
